SPRAY TANNING 101

A sun tan is the result of our body’s natural defense to UV rays. When we are exposed to ultraviolet rays our skin produces a brown pigment to guard against skin damage.

Spray tanning has been determined by medical professionals to be a safer alternative to conventional tanning methods that are known to cause cancer and premature aging. Spray tan solutions contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a sugar cane derivative that interacts with the outermost layer of your skin resulting in a bronze beautiful glow. Unlike traditional tanning, spray tanning does not involve UVA or UVB rays that are commonly linked to a variety of health issues including cancer.

Spray tan applications are customized to the client’s desired tone, darkness and targeted areas. A certified spray tan technician should always take into consideration the consumers experience with sunless tanning, the way they naturally tan, the reason for their tanning application, and the amount of time available for the tan to develop in addition to other factors.

Sunless tanning applications take about 15 minutes to spray on and then require additional time to dry. While most treatments are completed within thirty minutes , we advise our clients to allocate at least one hour for their spray tan in order to ensure optimal results and the best experience possible.

The spray tan can last anywhere from 7-14 days depending upon each individuals skin type, upkeep, and product use. As dead skin cells shed the tan will begin to fade as well.  Users can prolong their tan by keeping their skin moisturized and following all guidelines and pre and post care instructions.  Most sunless products require time to fully develop but new products now offer quicker development time.
